Coastal Hazard Adaptation Planning

Get Involved

Council is asking for your help.

Recent extreme high tides are a reminder that weather conditions can affect Port Lincoln's coastline in different ways.

We are collecting photos, observations and local knowledge of coastal storms and high tides that occurred in 2025 to better understand what happens during these events, and how things may change over time.

2025 was an exceptionally stormy year around our state with three significant events occurring on 26th May, 24th June and 9th July.

When considering future risk, we know that seas have been rising steadily for at least 170 years, and scientists predict that the rate of sea level rise will increase in the future. Whatever the rate of rise may be in, understanding our current risk will assist in planning for the long-term benefit of the community.

What we need from you

Send us your photos

Complete a short survey (3–5 minutes) - CLICK HERE

Tell us what you’ve seen along the coast

We are interested in:

  • storms and high tide events (eg. the 2025 storms)
  • other events or long-term changes to the coast you’ve noticed
  • long term records from any private rain gauges in Port Lincoln

You don’t need to be an expert - local knowledge is what matters.

Photos are especially useful if they show:

  • high water levels
  • water reaching roads, paths or low areas
  • stormwater/drainage interactions
  • erosion or shoreline changes
  • recognisable locations

If you can, please include location, approximate date/time and a short description of the photo.

Please ensure your total email attachment size is less than 10 MB. Ideal file size is approximately 1 MB for photographs.

More Information

Why this matters

We already have some information from past events, but we are especially interested in information from different areas around Port Lincoln for:

  • the 2025 storms
  • any earlier events that generated big waves, extreme tides or heavy rainfall

Your input will help Council build a clearer picture of coastal behaviour across Port Lincoln.

What happens next

This is the first stage of the project. No decisions are being made at this stage.

  • We are collecting information now
  • We will analyse the results
  • We will come back to the community later to share findings and get feedback

Face to face engagement sessions are expected to take place in August 2026.
