The public consultation period runs from Thursday 19 January 2023 to Thursday 9 February 2023
In 2021 City of Port Lincoln initially proposed to include a dog park as part of a concept plan for Nelson Square and presented the concept plan to the community for feedback. Community consultation was conducted from 16 September 2021 to 7 October 2021. After community consultation, although there had been strong support for off-leash park, Council recognised some community concerns about the future use and development of Nelson Square as a whole, and the inclusion of a dog park in this space.
As a result of the public consultation, Council agreed to explore other potential dog park site locations. Puckridge Place / Windsor Avenue was an alternative location identified to have the most qualities for a successful dog park.
$150,000 has been allocated to the dog park fully funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program with the project to be completed by 30 June 2023 in line with funding requirements.
A new concept plan has been developed by City of Port Lincoln and Adelaide based Architecture company, Greenhill Australia who specialise in civil engineering and landscape architecture. The proposed dog park is to be located at 6 Puckridge Place, Port Lincoln, an un-utilised parcel of land which was previously used for Tennis Tournaments.
The design concept features a 1.8 metre mesh security fencing around the perimeter to ensure a safe area for owners to exercise their dog off-leash and socialise with other dogs, two entry/exit points double gated, dog friendly drinking fountains, litter bins, and dog waste disposal stations.
The dogs and owners will get to play with re-purposed stormwater pipes and existing bollards and fallen tree logs that will create fun, natural activities, and obstacles for the dogs. The existing grass and trees will be retained to keep a cool feel to the enclosure and a slightly mounded area will be added for visual interest.
A new undercover area to provide shelter for the dog owners and additional seating is to be included within the park. New trees and plantings will surround the boundaries to suppress road noise and create a natural feeling environment.
As part of the Open Space Strategy 2021-2026, Council is committed to increasing the range of functions available for the community via open spaces such as the providing a dog park.
The community was invited to provide feedback on the draft Port Lincoln Dog Park Concept Plan from Thursday 19 January until 4pm on Thursday 9 February 2023.
